Character Name: Miguel Solana
Series: The Road to El Dorado
Age: 23

Physical Description: Miguel's about 5' 10", lean and with a broad chest. With more muscle than his taller, skinny counterpart, Miguel could easily be mistaken for the brawn of the pair (were it not for his less-than-violent tendencies). Still, even though he's more well-built, he's still got the leanness that comes with living on streets, and is still surprisingly flexible. He has medium-length blonde hair that sweeps to the base of his neck, and a very short beard. His hair, however, has rather darker visible roots, and his eyebrows and beard are the same darker shade, indicating that he probably dyes his hair. His skin is fairly light, and he has hazel eyes.

Miguel tends to dress in a very casual, comfortable manner, in clothes that are good for running and other such fleeing-related activities. Most often his clothing of choice is a red shirt with large, loose sleeves, brown pants, and soft shoes. He does wear a belt, because while not completely necessary, he thinks it's stylish, and besides, a belt does come in handy when fleeing sometimes. As for a dress, Miguel doesn't pull it off quite as effeminately as Tulio, but his broad chest allows for more support of a fake bosom. But that never happened.

Personality: Miguel is, by nature, a nice guy. He's friendly, helpful, caring, and generous ... although the last three really only apply to people he comes to like, Tulio in particular. Even while he's decent at heart, he's also a bit of a manipulative bastard - he helps Tulio with money-grubbing schemes and has loads of fun pulling them off, watching as the swindled yowl and try to get vengeance and fail miserably. Still, he's always felt a little guilty about taking money from people, and tries to convince Tulio to target only the obviously wealthy as often as he can ... or the really mean bastards. His moral compass is in full working condition, and he hates to see anybody get hurt under any circumstances. Miguel is very charismatic, able to gain friends and even followers just by being himself, and when truly despicable people show up, Miguel gets very angry - he's very strong-willed, and will do whatever he can to see them taken down: out of power, out of position, anything.

As opposed to Tulio, Miguel takes less interest in the material things in life. Oh, sure, he likes wine and women and a full purse, but to him, there is nothing more beautiful than a sunrise or sunset on the horizon. He's an adventurer at heart, wanting to explore the world fully and see all there is to see.

Abilities/Strengths/Weaponry: The greatest asset for Miguel is his charisma, friendliness, and puppy-like adorability. People like him almost instantly when they meet him, and he's more than happy to return that liking. He's smart (although not as clever as Tulio) and a pretty good actor, able to fool people into believing most of what he says ... although that might be helped along by the fact that people are inclined to believe him from the start. He's also a fairly good swordsman, having trained in the arts since he was young, and knows quite a lot about the noble heirarchy and political speaking given how he was raised. Oh, and he plays a mean guitar.

Weaknesses: Miguel's natural goodness frequently gets him into trouble, as he's more inclined to believe someone just from what they say rather than from the truth. He lacks a lot of common sense, and his constant belief that the world is inherently good and that most people in it are also inherently good gets him into trouble. There's also a distinct lack of that little voice in the back of his head telling him to quit when he's ahead ... and because of that, he gets into trouble with important (or at least influential) people by not knowing when to shut his mouth. He also has a distinct weakness for Tulio and adventuring, willing to give up almost anything for either (but Tulio always comes first).

History: Miguel was born in Dardenelles to an upper-class, but not ruling house, family. He was an only child, and a bit spoiled because of it - his mother truly adored him and wanted only the best for him, and as such shielded him quite a bit from the nastiness of the world. He grew up believing in good things, in truth and the beauty of nature, but still able to discuss and swordfight to the best of his ability - well, for as long as he was taught those things, anyway. He was frequently bored and lonely in his parents' mansion and took to exploration, escaping to the outside once he had fully discovered the extents of his home. That he went missing so often eventually became commonplace; after all, he would always be home by about dinnertime, if not in perfect condition then at least unharmed.

When he was ten, his parents hired on a new cook and her family. Miguel started to frequent the kitchen a little more often, watching the cooking and, on baking days, stealing whatever he could before being caught. One day, as he was trying to sneak some sweets, someone smacked him on the hand - hard - with a spoon, and startled, Miguel found himself staring over the counter at a dark-haired boy about his age. After he got over his initial shock, he was swept with joy at finally meeting someone his own age, and dragged the boy off to find out who he was.

He was introduced to the boy who would be his partner for likely the rest of his life - Tulio Espinosa, the cook's son. Ecstatic to have someone to play with, Miguel began dragging Tulio everywhere with him, going on little adventures and playing countless games with the fellow youth. Now he had a real friend, and therefore a reason not to go to any of his lessons any more (he was homeschooled, as many upper-class children who couldn't go to the Faustus Academy were), Miguel took to skipping out on lessons to play with his friend. They were frequently caught and reprimanded, but that didn't stop either of them - or really, Miguel - from continuing to do what he wanted.

As he got older, Miguel continued to associate strongly with Tulio, although his parents weren't particularly approving of it. About the time he was thirteen, Miguel followed Tulio out of the house one evening after slipping out of a very boring party and followed his friend into the streets of Dardenelles. He was discovered, but Tulio didn't take him back home; instead, he allowed Miguel to come with him to where he was going to make a few bets with badger-cock fighting. Already a little overwhelmed by the new circumstances he was in, Miguel was shocked and horrified to find out that the bloody sport was actually meant for people to make money off of; in an attempt to be a little hero, he set free all of the badger-cocks. A frenzy began, with chaos and rage running rampant. While the two boys did manage to escape the direct wrath of the gamblers, they were picked up by the local authorities instead, and brought back home. Miguel's parents, believing everything to be Tulio's fault, fired Tulio's mother and sent her away immediately.

When Miguel found out not long afterwards, he was infuriated. He went straight to his parents and told them that it wasn't totally Tulio's fault, that it was, in fact, his fault, that he alone had followed Tulio when he shouldn't have and set the animals free and that it was his fault they'd been caught. While his parents initially didn't believe his word, Miguel began to refuse to do anything they asked, shutting himself up in his room and threatening to scale the wall out the window and run away from home for good. Finally, after frequent threats and pressuring, Miguel's parents gave in and re-hired the cook, bringing Tulio back into Miguel's life. Still, now his parents knew that Tulio was a great weakness to Miguel; instead of threatening to punish their son, they now threatened to punish Tulio if Miguel didn't go to his lessons and behave. In turn, Miguel did start doing as he was asked, but also started teaching Tulio everything he learned - including swordsmanship. Luckily for him, Tulio was appreciative enough to teach Miguel the tricks of the less-than-honorable-trade as well.

Four years later, with their friendship still solid, Miguel and Tulio's lives took a turn for the terrible. After sneaking out one night, a group of Royalists, disguised as bandits, burned the Solana household to the ground, killing everyone inside - including both of their parents. When the boys returned, there was almost nothing left but a blaze of flame, smoke, and embers. The blow shook Miguel to the very core, and for the first few weeks after the loss, he was shaken and quiet, unsure of himself and everything around him. Had Tulio not been around, he might have simply given up and disappeared. Fortunately, Tulio was around, and snapped out of the daze they'd both fallen into quicker. Together (although mostly through Tulio), they managed to get passage on board a ship heading north.

For the next year, before the war officially began, Miguel and Tulio traveled the islands, learning sleights of hand and little scams and using those to make money. Sometimes they did legitmate work - actual jobs, or Miguel playing a guitar and Tulio collecting the money - but most of the time they were busy tricking people - scams being the foremost among them, with direct thievery and pickpocketing a close second and Miguel playing his guitar while Tulio picked the pockets of the enthralled coming in somewhere near third. Learning about the poverty of the world changed Miguel, as he hadn't been aware of such suffering while he was living in Dardenelles; he became a bit more hardened, but was still the generally decent guy that he'd been before. After all, helping out the people in need made him happy, and everyone up north - or at least, nearly everyone - was in need.

After the war started, their travels continued - hopping from island to island, taking advantage of those involved in the war and making money, living from day to day without knowing when something was going to go terribly wrong. Despite a few captures over the years and short jail sentences, the two never suffered immensely or were terribly punished. While Miguel wasn't particularly pleased with taking advantage of those suffering from the war, he wasn't entirely opposed to it; he just always carried a little guilt over it, and still does. With the war over, Miguel now stays with Tulio as he always has, helping out his friend in their scams and earning as much money as he can while still exploring the islands and living the adventure he once dreamed of going on as best he can.
